Survival rates for those diagnosed with mesothelioma have actually been steadily improving over the past few decades due to new treatments, more research and better funding.

Overall, about 40 percent of mesothelioma patients survive the first year after diagnosis. These rates vary based on many factors: Age, race, gender, cancer stage, location, cell type and mesothelioma type.

Historically, survival rates for mesothelioma are measured in terms of one-year survival. However, many mesothelioma patients are beating the odds and living far beyond median survival rates thanks to advances in treatment.


MESOTHELIOMA SURVIVAL STATISTICS

Statistics tell us that 40 percent of patients survive the first year after their diagnosis. This is known as the 1-year survival rate for mesothelioma. Scientists often measure mesothelioma life span by 1, 2, and 5-year survival rates.

The 2-year survival rate for mesothelioma is 20 percent. So a fifth of all patients diagnosed live longer than 2 years.

Fewer than ten percent of mesothelioma patients live longer than 5 years.

Remember that each individual case of mesothelioma is different. Statistics that apply to others may not apply to you. Your actual life expectancy depends on your treatments, your tumor location and your cell type. 

These statistics include best and worst case scenarios. They include patients who have received surgery and those who were ineligible.

Summary of mesothelioma survival rates:

40 percent of mesothelioma patients live longer than one year.
20 percent of mesothelioma patients live longer than two years.
10 percent of mesothelioma patients live live longer than five years.


Survival by location, stage and cell subtype of mesothelioma

Survival varies with each location, stage and particular cell subtype of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is generally associated with a poor prognosis as it is an aggressive disease.

Mesothelioma is usually not found until it is at an advanced stage, which makes it more difficult to treat. Only a small number of people are diagnosed with early stage mesothelioma.

Muslims Pray In Mecca For Turkey’s Victory in Afrin

ANKARA: Muslims from around the world prayed for Turkey’s success in Afrin operation during their Umrah pilgrimage in Mecca on Sunday.

ANADOLU NEWS AGENCY reported videos of the people praying in Mecca are being circulated on social media.

Prayers were also held across Turkey on Sunday. People gathered at 90,000 mosques in the country and prayed for Turkey's success in "Operation Olive Branch" in Afrin.

Ali Erbas, head of Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate, also participated in the prayers at Ankara’s Haci Bayram mosque.

Turkey launched “Operation Olive Branch” on Saturday at 5 p.m.(1400GMT) in Syria’s northwestern Afrin region; the aim of the operation is to establish security and stability along Turkish borders and the region as well as to eliminate PKK/KCK/PYD-YPG and Daesh terror groups, and protect the Syrian people from the oppression and cruelty of terrorists.

The operation is being conducted under the framework of Turkey’s rights based on international law, UN Security Council’s decisions, especially no. 1624 (2005), 2170 (2014) and 2178 (2014) and as per the self-defense right under 51st item of the UN charter, while being respectful to Syria’s territorial integrity.

Turkey has long protested against the U.S. support for the PYD -- the Syrian offshoot of the terrorist PKK -- and its military wing the YPG.

Washington has called the terrorist group a "reliable ally" in its fight against Daesh in Syria even though its mother organization, the PKK, is listed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the U.S., and the EU, having waged a terror campaign against Turkey for more than 30 years, killing nearly 40,000 people.

Afrin has been a major hideout for the PYD/PKK since July 2012 when the Assad regime in Syria left the city to the terror group without putting up a fight.

The Turkish cities of Kilis and Hatay across the Syrian border are within the firing range of the PYD/PKK group from Afrin, which sits atop a hill. The terror group has also used Amanos Mountains to penetrate from Syria into Turkey.

The PYD/PKK depends on Afrin to connect to the Mediterranean from northwestern Syria. The terrorist organization also threatens Idlib deescalation zone over Afrin.

A quarter of Syria land and 65 percent of Turkey-Syria border is under occupation of the terrorist organization. 

Meanwhile, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday afternoon said the ongoing Operation Olive Branch in Syria's Afrin will be completed "in very short time".


Addressing a massive crowd in western city of Bursa before ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party's Women Branch congress, Erdogan said "hopefully, we will complete this operation in a very short time."

Turkish forces move into Afrin with Free Syrian Army

Turkish ground forces have started to move into Syria’s Afrin with Free Syrian Army, according to information collected by Anadolu Agency correspondents in the region Sunday.

Turkish Armed Forces backed by armored vehicles, special forces and infantry regiments advanced 5 kilometers (3 miles) inside Afrin as part of Operation Olive Branch.

During the movement, no major clashes took place.


Turkish warplanes and artillery have hit 153 PYD/PKK and Daesh targets in Syria's Afrin, so far, the Turkish General Staff said earlier on Sunday.

2. Pembinaan pembersih udara itu mampu meningkatkan kualiti udara dalam kawasan seluas kira-kira 10 kilometer persegi.

3. Laporan daripada Institut Alam Sekitar Bumi di Akademi Sains China menyatakan sistem pembersih udara itu boleh mengurangkan 15 peratus partikel halus dalam asap yang memberi kesan buruk kepada kesihatan.


4. Menara itu siap sepenuhnya pada Mei 2016 dan kini menjalani ujian untuk melihat sama ada ia betul-betul meningkatkan kualiti udara di kawasan sekitarnya.


5. Menara berkenaan juga merupakan sistem pembersihan udara berskala besar yang dibantu dengan tenaga solar.


6. Di tapak menara terbabit, terdapat beberapa rumah hijau yang berfungsi untuk menarik udara tercemar ke dalam menara itu dan membersihkannya sebelum melepaskannya kembali ke alam sekitar.

7. Menara tersebut mampu mengasingkan partikel halus termasuk nitrogen oksida, nitrogen dioksida serta sulfur dioksida.

8. Menurut ketua penyelidik program tersebut, Cao Junji, menara berkenaan mampu membersihkan lebih 10 juta meter padu udara setiap hari.

9. Penduduk sekitar mengakui kualiti udara semakin baik dengan pembinaan menara pembersih udara itu.

10. Saiz rumah hijau boleh meliputi hampir 30 kilometer persegi (11.6 batu persegi) dan menara itu akan berkuasa untuk membersihkan udara untuk sebuah bandar berukuran kecil.

Ex-CIA Arrested On Espionage Act Charge

WASHINGTON — Justice Department said on Tuesday a former C.I.A. officer suspected of helping China identify the agency’s informants in that country has been arrested.

NEW YORK TIMES reported many of the informants were killed in a systematic dismantling of the C.I.A.’s spy network in China starting in 2010 that was one of the American government’s worst intelligence failures in recent years, several former intelligence officials have said.

The arrest of the former agent, Jerry Chun Shing Lee, 53, capped an intense F.B.I. investigation that began around 2012 after the C.I.A. began losing its informants in China. 

Mr. Lee was at the center of a mole hunt in which some intelligence officials believed that he had betrayed the United States but others thought that the Chinese government had hacked the C.I.A.’s covert communications used to talk to foreign sources of information.

Still other former intelligence officials have also argued that the spy network might have been crippled by a combination of both, as well as sloppy tradecraft by agency officers in China. 

The counterintelligence investigation into how the Chinese managed to hunt down American agents was a source of friction between the C.I.A. and F.B.I.

Mr. Lee, who left the C.I.A. in 2007 and was living in Hong Kong, was apprehended at Kennedy International Airport and charged in federal court in Northern Virginia with the unlawful retention of national defense information.

In 2012, Mr. Lee returned to the United States with his family. F.B.I. agents investigating him searched his luggage during a pair of hotel stays, and found two small books with handwritten notes that contained classified information.

Prosecutors said that in the books, he had written down details about meetings between C.I.A. informants and undercover agents, as well as their real names and phone numbers.

More than a dozen C.I.A. informants were killed or imprisoned by the Chinese government. The extent to which the informant network was unraveled, reported last year by The New York Times, was a devastating setback for the C.I.A.

During those searches, which appear to have been conducted surreptitiously, FBI agents found two small books determined to contain information classified up to the “Top Secret” level that pertained to Lee’s CIA work.


“The datebook contained handwritten information pertaining to, but not limited to, operational notes from asset meetings, operational meeting locations, operational phone numbers, true names of assets, and covert facilities,” FBI Special Agent Kellie O’Brien said in an affidavit submitted on Saturday to a federal magistrate judge in Alexandria, Virginia. 

“The address book contained true names and phone numbers of assets and covert CIA employees, as well as the addresses of CIA facilities.”

Terlampau sejuk -62 Darjah Celsius, Termometer Gagal Berfungsi

GLOBAL: Sejuk sehingga penyukat suhu gagal berfungsi . Begitulah yang berlaku di sebuah kawasan di Siberia apabila suhu terlampau sejuk dicatatkan. 

Termometer yang diletakkan di Oymyakon sebuah puat peranginan gagal berfungsi selepas mencatatkan rekod -62 darjah Celsius minggu ini.

Omyakon didiami kira-kira 50 penghuni terletak 750 meter paras laut dan mempunyai siang kira-kira tiga jam pada Disember dan sehingga 21 jam pada musim panas.

Sementara itu Siberian Times melaporkan suhu tempatan dicatatkan serendah sehingga -67 darjah celsius mencapai rekod paling sejuk -67.7 celsius pada Februari 1933.

Suhu itu adalah paling rendah dicatatkan di luar Antartika yang didiami manuasia.

Untuk rekod suhu paling sejuk pernah dicatatkan apabila satelit NASA merekodkan suhu -94.7 celsius di timur Antartika pada 2013.

Saudi City of Madinah Experiences 2.5 Magnitude Earthquake

MADINAH, Saudi Arabia: The Holy City of Madinah experienced a 2.5 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday, engineer Hani Zahran of the Saudi Geological Society.

Arab News reported the center of the earthquake was 14km north-west of Madinah at a depth of 7km below the surface.

City officials confirmed that there were no reports of damage from the earthquake.

سجلت محطات الرصد الزلزالي التابعة للهيئة هزة أرضية ظهر اليوم 29 ربيع الآخر 1439 هـ الموافق 16 يناير 2018 م الساعة الثانية وتسع وخمسون دقيقة بالتوقيت المحلي بقوة 2.5 درجة على مقياس ريختر وتبعد مسافة 14 كم شمال غرب المدينة المنورة، وتم الشعور بالهزة في المناطق القريبة من الهزة.

Tariq Aba Al-Khail, a spokesman for the General Authority for Meteorology and Environmental Protection, said that the tremor was "weak and not dangerous", noting that small tremors occur often in the Kingdom.
